Seth: "What do you have planned for tomorrow?"
I will answer.
Me: "What is the weather suppose to be like?" Because, I'm married to the weather man, in case you were wondering. Well, he doesn't get paid or anything, but he keeps up with the weather, let me tell you!
So on the night of the 27th, Seth said that Montgomery was suppose to get inches of snow. We talked about how that was crazy that they were getting snow and not us.
This picture was taken at 10:24 on Jan. 28th. I sent it to Seth and said something like, the boys are watching it snow really hard!
I get a call a few minutes later saying that the schools were closing at 11:30. I make phone calls to parents because I'm on the emergency phone tree for Laurel and Savannah's class. This takes a little time. I look out side and see that the driveway is already white. I tell the boys, it looks like it is going to stick this time. Let's go get the girls and we can come home and play.
I think it will be just a quick trip to the school and back (15 minutes one way).
As soon as I get on the highway, I realize that this is no ordinary snow for Alabama. There are already cars in the ditch. If I didn't stay right on the tracks that had already been made, I would start sliding. I realized I had made a huge mistake by putting the boys in the van with no shoes, and no lunch. I did put clothes on Landon, just in case you were wondering. And we turned those underwear around the right way! :)
Remember, quick trip is what I was thinking.
It had taken me an hour to get 6 miles so I knew that I wouldn't make it to the school and I didn't want Laurel and Savannah to worry so I called a friend, who lives in the school neighborhood and she went and picked them up.
I drove very, very slowly. I saw people abandoning their cars. I had never witnessed anything like this.
I finally got to Wendy's house. They ate their lunch and Wendy fed the boys. Yes, I have great friends!
We went a back way home to miss all the traffic I had just been through. It still took an hour to get home.
It was the prettiest, softest, powdery snow. I just couldn't get excited about it because I knew so many people were stranded. I was glued to the t.v. watching all the chaos. The interstates were jammed with vehicles that couldn't go anywhere. I felt so bad for these people. And poor James Spann, the weather man of all weather men! He was begging for forgiveness! He called it, "an epic failure!"
People spent the night on the interstates. Children and teachers spent the night in schools. People abandoned their cars to get home or to a warm place. It was a mess.
I felt so helpless because their were friends out there that needed help and I couldn't help.
The next day the kids got out in the snow and played some, but I could never get into it. It was beautiful but it was hard to get excited when so many people were still stranded.
A winter storm that we will never forget. And a little update on all of Savannah's advice. There is now a bag of snacks in the car at all times. We put shoes on the feet no matter what! Be prepared people! You never know what will happen, or when the weather men will just plain get it wrong!
